You CAN program this machine to have the needle stop in the UP position Overall I am quite happy with this machine. There are a few specific things I have found -Several reviewers said that they were unhappy that the needle always ended in the down position and could not be changed. That is not correct. It does come programmed with the needle ending down, but the instruction book tells how to reset it to end in the up position. Nearly four years later and I still adore it I bought this machine on Amazon in 2013. This is my first sewing machine, and I hadn’t sewn since making pj pants in high school over a decade before buying it. I’ve since made slipcovers for two parsons chairs and a club chair, a queen size duvet cover, several items of clothing, curtains, blankets, a cover for my machine, and several other things I can’t remember right now. Check on the return date in case it is broken. I ordered this machine for myself and taught myself to sew. I love the machine and told my sister in law about it and she ordered one. I then bought one in October for a Christmas gift for my daughter. Straight away out of the box the machine did not work. Even though the machine was brand new it was past the return date.
